Walkthrough
To start off in this quest, you'll need to climb up to the top level of Fort Dawnguard. You'll find the staircase for this on the eastern side. Once there, Isran will lead you to the torture room where he's been holding Serana.
When you talk to Serana, she'll tell you that her father Harkon isn't a good person "even by vampire standards," and that he's obsessed with an ancient prophecy. Serana will then speculate that something on the
Elder Scroll (Sun) -- which she'll still have with her -- might reveal a way to stop him. The only problem is, only Moth Priests can read elder scrolls. Isran won't think much of Serana or her plan, but he'll mention that a Moth Priest recently came to Skyrim, and that you might try talking to carriage drivers and innkeepers to find out where he went. Serana will add that the College of Winterhold is a good source for information, too, and then she'll begin following you to help you in your search.
There are several people in Skyrim who can tell about the Moth Priest, including Alfarinn at the Windhelm Stables, Hulda at the Bannered Mare in Whiterun, and Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold. They'll all inform you that the Moth Priest went to Dragon Bridge.
Dragon Bridge is located on the western side of Skyrim, to the southwest of Solitude. Most people there won't have anything useful to tell you, but if you speak with a guard or with Clinton Lylvieve, then you'll learn that a Moth Priest recently left the city via the bridge to the south.
Along the road to the south, you'll come to an overturned wagon with a dead soldier and a dead vampire on the ground next to it. When you loot the vampire you'll find a Vampire's Note, which will indicate that the Moth Priest was captured and taken to Forebears' Holdout.
Forebears' Holdout is located nearby to the east. Inside, you'll encounter a handful of vampires and their minions, including a vampire named Malkus (#1), who will attack you on sight. You'll also discover the Moth Priest Dexion Evicus being held inside a shimmering magic prison (#2). To free Dexion, you'll need to loot the
Weystone Focus from Malkus' corpse and then use it on the Weystone Source (#3). That will lower the barrier to the prison.
When Dexion leaves his prison, he'll attack you because he's still enthralled to Malkus, and you'll need to defeat him to break the enchantment. Afterwards, Dexion will agree to help you with the
Elder Scroll (Sun), and he'll head off to Fort Dawnguard. When you get there yourself, Dexion will read from the scroll, and he'll see a reference to
Auriel's Bow, but he'll also learn that Harkon's prophecy is split between three elder scrolls, and so you'll need two more -- the
Elder Scroll (Blood) and the
Elder Scroll (Dragon) -- to fully understand what's going on.
1 - Malkus
2 - Prison
3 - Weystone Source
