does "Breach" really help? I was under the impression it was one of the less useful powers, especially if you do most of your damage with a saber anyway.

I know there are times when it will be less clear, like you said. But I think it's okay to "break the speed limit" while shouting for all to stand clear because you're chasing after some monster who has kidnapped the princess, ect..

Thanks Coot. My plan is to now dual my Cleric at level 9 (GM in Mace, Specialized in Sling) and dual the Illusionist at level 13 (maxing out bows and greatswords, with maximum ApR).

Since you're soloing, you can definitely become powerful enough to beat these guys in chapter 2. Spoiler:
Defeating the Red Dragon is the last mission of the Paladin Stronghold, and you gain MASSIVE amounts of experience if you wait until they tell you to hunt him down.

Just make sure the person you're buying the games from on ebay has a good feedback rating. You should be fine then.

This character is intended to be my only thief (which I do not value very highly) and my main mage (with a backup bard).

yeah, but you have no need for a single classed thief.

As I said, even in a full party, playing a F/M/T will allow your Thief to be good enough in any Thief-related situation for the entire game.

1) Elf Fighter/Mage/Thief
2) Elf Mage/Thief
3) Gnome Illusionist/Thief
4) Human Thief/Mage (dual after level 7 - 10)

I know none of these options produce the "optimum" Mage (which would be single-classed from the start), but I don't want a character like that in this game. I won't find scrolls fast ...

I think a multiclassed Fighter/Thief is a very good protagonist, mainly because there aren't very many good thief NPCs. I like a F/M/T even more though.
