When to add ToB

I played BG2 SoA many years ago and recently purchased ToB. I plan on playing from start again as I have forgotten enough to be considered a newbie. Plus, my old saved games are long gone anyhow.

So, I was wondering when I should install ToB; at the beginning or should I wait for some later point ...

Ah this changes everything then. If you are playing Diablo 1 then the answer to your question is no. Diablo 1 is basicly a dungeon crawler. Tristram is the town you embark from on your quests and you basicly work your way further down into the dungeon under the town.

I believe we all assumed you ...

I must admit, I do envy you a little bit..starting out new to the game. I would love to be able to play D2 again when everything was fresh and unknown!

By the way, I believe that act 2 mercs can use polearm class weapons, spear class weapons and javelin class weapons. This is assuming the merc has the reqs met as stated above.

I would strongly caution against any character with uniques abilities for boosting magic find. I ...

I would think some of the runeword bows would be great; maybe wrath or ice. Also, a Lycander's aim or Bloodraven's charge (with good stats) might be good cheaper alternatives.
A good helm would be Nightwing's Veil or Tal Rasha's death mask for those on a budget.
I would go with rare or crafted ...

If you are going pure cold sorc, you likely could max both skills. A sorc with max'ed blizzard, glacial spike and ice blast.

I don't really play D2 much anymore, but I still have a zon build similar to this. This zon used Mavina's set. A couple of ongoing problems I had with this character was keeping my mana pool full and resists in hell. I also grew to hate the time delay on immolation arrow. I managed to level this ...

You can create the cow portal with a socketed wirts leg. Some people on the closed realms thought this was actually a good idea, because they mistakenly believed a leg socketed with a gem increased the magic find inside the cow level. Just another in a long line of ridiculous mf rumors that seem to ...

I am going to have to disagree with you on this one LonelyPilgrim. While choosing a magic-casting style druid makes sense with the current version (1.10), this would not work as well with a previous version such as 1.07 thru 1.09. There are two reasons for this;
1) The main change that made magic ...

The jungle areas in act 3 are possibly the most confusing in the game. I don't know if you have tried this yet, but you can bring up the outline map of the area you are exploring if you press the tab key iirc. If you haven't done this yet, this will help you find your way around. Other than that ...

I really prefer a sorc that has skills from 2 trees, since monsters in hell are usually immune to one type of damage (physical, cold, poison, fire, lightning, magic). Skills from all 3 sorc trees will probably spread you too thin in 1.10, but skills from 2 trees works nicely. The hell immunity ...

Frozen orb used to be the king of sorc cold spells. But since 1.10 and synergies, it has lost some of it's popularity. This is probably due to the fact that it only has one synergy (ice bolt). Ice bolt in of itself isn't a good skill and only lends 2% increased dmg to orb with each point placed in ...

If you are building a paladin that relies on thorns, then I would go with a merc from act 5. Your current merc will raise your defense, making it harder for monsters to hit you. If monsters can't hit you then your thorns aura is wasted. An act 5 merc will make a decent meat shield to soak up some of ...

The holy freeze aura is only available to the nightmare act 2 merc (defensive iirc), but it should work in any difficulty. I would just hire a new merc in NM act 2 with the holy freeze aura.

I may be reading your question wrong, but are you aware that you can use the wp's to move directly from act to act? If you activate/click on a waypoint, you will be shown a list of all the wp's in that act (with one's you have activated being highlighted). There are tabs at the top of this window ...
