Actually, v1.5 unofficial patch is announced on GameBanshee's Bloodlines site. You can find the patch here.

I think that the basic answer is the same one given for much of what happens in any movie. . .because it was in the script.

Once you have the crossbow, sell it to one of the merchants, then buy it back and you should then be able to purchase ammo from that merchant. Alternately, install the unofficial v1.5 patch and you will have access to crossbows (and fire crossbows) earlier.

I have yet to see any grenades show up ...

Or you can go for the cheap kill.

To the best of my knowledge there is no crossbow ammo available in this game (dissenters please post). The only way you can come up with crossbow ammo is to use the console and do the appropriate "give item". I forget what the exact item name is.

Alternately, you can use the console to giftxp for enough xp to buy level 1 potence.

This is one of the more annoying problems in the game (of the so-close-yet-so-far variety). As a last resort, do a search for Bloodlines Cheats. Get the console up and running and get the disable clipping command. Disable clipping; go through door; enable clipping.

Okay, the above posts make some good points. Before you are done with this game you will have to max either your brawl or melee related skills. Going up against the bosses generally means you can't take the stealthy approach. You will have to go toe-to-toe with a few of your enemies. That said ...

There should be a fairly obvious unlocked door that leads into the backyard of the salvage yard. Not sure what to tell you on this one. Maybe you have a glitch or maybe you need to take a closer look around the inside of the salvage yard building.
