I can't tell you how to get to the root directory, because I don't know where you installed BG1 OR BG2. The default, I believe, is C:\Program Files\Baldur's Gate for BG1 and C:\Program Files\BGII - SoA for BG2. Try looking there first, otherwise, search your hard drive for baldur.exe.

You have to initiate Xzar's quest to find Montaron in the Harper Hold, otherwise you won't get the Jaheira Harper quests.

More than likely, when you exported your character out of BG1 it was saved in the /characters directory under whatever folder you installed BG1 to (the folder where you installed the game is the root directory).
