Background
You'll trigger this quest if Syanna died during the quest
Tesham Mutna, whether you killed Dettlaff or let him go.
Walkthrough
You'll start out in Toussaint's prison (#1) with only a
Prisoner's Shirt and
Prisoner's Trousers as usable equipment. A fellow prisoner named Handsome Jacques will offer to get you things -- presumably for exorbitant prices -- and he'll also let you know that you're on laundry duty together.
When you enter the laundry area (via Exit A), Jacques will tell you to pick up some
Soap (#3) and
Dirty Clothes (#4). You'll then need to put the items into a washtub (#5), pick up the stick from the ground nearby, and get washing.
As you're finishing up the job, the three peasants who got arrested at the bootblack's stand during the quest
Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away will corner you, and Jacques will leave you to face them on your own. No matter what you say to the trio, you'll have to fight them using the washing stick you just picked up, but if you use Axii / Delusion on them first, then you'll only have to fight two of them rather than all three.
It won't make any difference whether you win or lose the fight, because right at its conclusion some guards will rush in and send everybody to solitary confinement. You'll end up in your cell (#6) for a week, but then a guard will come in, tie your hands, and escort you to the tower.
At the top of the tower (#7), you'll meet Damien. He'll tell you that if it were up to him, then you'd rot in the prison for the rest of your life, and that the duchess feels the same way. But then he'll reveal that you've been freed -- because of Dandelion. Dandelion will then come in and inform you that he managed to work his magic to get you out of prison, and that you even get to keep Corvo Bianco. But then he'll leave for the royal cemetery so he can console the duchess.
With your incarceration complete, the guard will escort you out of the prison. You'll discover your confiscated equipment in a chest at the main gate (#8). When you get outside, you'll find Regis waiting for you. He'll welcome you back to freedom, but then he'll begin extolling a theory he has regarding Syanna's murders -- how there should have been a fifth victim representing a lack of compassion.
If you're interested, you can continue looking into Syanna's plot. You'll stay with the current quest, but really you'll be completing the investigative portion of the quest
Pomp and Strange Circumstance. Please refer to that quest's page for more information. During your investigation, you'll learn that the duchess was supposed to be the fifth victim. This will earn you 50 xp. If you're feeling brave, then you can head over to the royal crypt to let the duchess know what you discovered, but she won't be happy to see you or learn your news, so you won't gain anything from it.
At the end of the quest, whether you investigated anything or not, you'll head over to the Mere-Lachaiselongue Cemetery to do some drinking with Regis. During the ensuing conversation, Regis will mention that he's left a gift for you at Corvo Bianco. When you eventually make your way over there, you'll find a
Mutagenerator on your nightstand. It'll create random
Greater Mutagens for you when you kill enough enemies. You'll just have to use the item in your inventory once it has been charged.
1 - Courtyard
If you turn on your witcher senses, then on the eastern side of this courtyard, then you'll detect a loose brick. Behind the brick you'll uncover Notes Found in the Toussaint Prison, which will trigger the quest
The Perks of Being a Jailbird. The
Small Hammer and Chisel for Carving Stone found in the cart in the northern part of the courtyard is a part of the same quest.
2 - Gwent Player
If you beat the gwent player here, then you'll win
Bread. But if you lose, then you'll have to give up your
Prisoner's Shirt.
3 - Soap
4 - Dirty Clothes
5 - Washtub
6 - Cells
7 - Tower
8 - Main Gate
