Background
You'll receive this quest the first time that you enter Ardo's residence (in Praios Square). At that time, caretaker Muddlemosh will give you a letter from Rakorium, which will invite you to visit the Temple of Hesinde (also in Praios Square).
Walkthrough
Inside the temple, you'll meet Dorion and Ardat Whitecliff (#1). They'll tell you about the goddess Hesinde and also about the Dragon Quest, which "is proclaimed every 87 years to find the one champion who will thwart the forces of darkness." Dorion will then tell you that the Voice of the Oracle (a dragon statue), which is required for the Dragon Quest, was broken into three pieces during the fire that destroyed the temple, and that he'd like you to explore the catacombs under the temple to find them.
To get into the catacombs, you'll first need to track down Novice Avanti on the second level of the temple (#2). He'll give you the
Key to the Cellars of the Temple of Hesinde, which will allow you to open a pair of locked gates on Level 2 (#3) and descend deeper beneath the temple. Your conversation with Avanti will net you 20 experience points.
Inside the catacombs, you'll face a lot of amoebas. The amoebas shouldn't be too tough for you, but they'll put a "rotten stink" on your party, which you'll only be able to remove with
Soap. Since the penalty for the stink is only -3 charisma, it's best to wait until you've killed all of the amoebas before cleaning up. You can buy
Soap from the hucksters in town.
On the fourth level of the temple you'll discover the rooms where the statue pieces are supposed to be (#4). However, you'll only find the
Right Wing of Statue of Umbracor and the
Left Wing of Statue of Umbracor in those rooms. For the final piece, the
Back of Statue of Umbracor, you'll have to descend to the bottom level, where you'll encounter several emerald spiders, including a boss emerald spider.
You'll find the final piece of the statue in the vicinity of the boss spider, on the ground next to a dead "red butcher" (#6). You'll get 50 experience points for picking it up. If you then loot the butcher, you'll find 1 ducat, some
Orders, and more. The
Orders will hint how the amoebas came to be in the temple.
When you return to Dorion (#1), you'll receive 50 more experience points. Dorion will then assemble the three statue pieces into the Voice of the Oracle, and it will speak to you. It will name you the champion of the Dragon Quest, and it will give you three quests to complete. These quests will span the next three chapters in the walkthrough, starting with
The Addled Mind in Moorbridge in Chapter 4.
1 - Dorion and Ardat Whitecliff
If you have a high enough prowess in Etiquette, then you'll get a special greeting option when you talk to Dorion, and if you select it then you'll receive 5 experience points.
2 - Novice Avanti
You'll usually find Novice Avanti in this part of the level (#2). After gaining the key from him, if you talk to him again then he'll give you an optional task in the quest. He'll ask you to find the book
Magica Lominosus, but he won't have any idea about where it might be hiding in the temple.
Supposedly the book location is random, and it can appear on any pedestal on level 2, but we've only found it in one place (#2a). If you locate the book and bring it back to Avanti, then he'll reward you with the
Recipe for Cleverness Elixir, and you'll also receive 20 experience points.
Note: If you don't trigger Avanti's task until after completing the quest, then the book won't spawn, and (obviously) you won't be able to find it for him.
3 - Locked Gates
Novice Avanti (#2) will give you the key to these gates.
4 - Statue Rooms
5 - Sarcophagus
In the sarcophagus here you'll find a
Yellowed Diary, from which you'll learn that a "hideous woman" was responsible for the temple fire.
6 - Emerald Spider / Dead Red Butcher / Statue Piece
