I like discussions like this - being interested in history as well as religion/philosophy and gaming - as students, we spent hours on such subjects.

if we look at potential fictional roles for a 'paladin', then all law and order should come into it, not just running around with swords. I think the ...

evil party?

Edwin as mage
Viconia as cleric
Korgan as tank
Jaheira/Haedalis if you feel like it

I like Vicki so I even have her in generally good/neutral parties if I don't want keldorn.

although only +2, the upgraded mace of disruption gives immunity to level drain, which is very handy for level-crititical characters such as casters - I generally prefer to have a mage use the amulet of power, so the mace is a handy off-hand weapon for a cleric.

my dualled ranger-cleric tended to ...

I am playing my first Ranger dualled to Cleric and was surprised to get druid spells - I dualled at lvl 14 ranger (I think) which wasted the axe of the unyielding and other edged weapons, but with the flail of ages slowing enemies and obtaining immunity to level drain through the amulet/mace of ...

going back to the OP

law enforcement officers go "undercover" which is what your character is doing to gain the thieves aid - in fact you do not have to do the master thief Maevar quest to get help from Linval. you do need to go and get attacked first by shadow thieves then by vampires.

with the ...

that was the quest I meant - I might go back to the saved game (if I can find it) and look under buildings. my character was uber-powerful and due to enchantments has very good flight capabilities, so I had been able to fly around the area hunting enemies. I could also probably blast any spriggins ...

I have used Sarevok as my main tank once of twice in ToB and there are a few weapons that really suit him, from a RPG perspective - one weapon to give him is the Silver Sword - which has a good vorpal hit-ratio - add that to his Deathbringer Assault (a natural vorpal ability with 200HP damage or so ...

it is more fun getting 25 CHA by going 'round the block' shall we say!

lots of items make it possible and I admit that I have used it on low CHA characters to give them the extra ring-slot back. in RPG terms, limiting the character to 2 rings is unjustified, so using an exploit to get CHA to a ...

my machine is 4gb (I think) and I had upgraded my previous one to that kind of RAM - my old machine, whilst slower processor crashes less often than my newer one, so when I get a problem, I move the save game between machines and play past the problem area on the old machine. once I'm happy, I save ...

you might fancy a full-install - that way the disc is needed only as authorisation - the game plays much quicker that way, especially if you have to move between PRA (party-required-areas).

I've been putting points into WIS for non-clerics on the assumption that it affected STs - I never looked at the implementation. what a waste of points over the years!

Spoiler?

8 million with ToB installed, Drunk. Although with the vanilla game, and without exploiting any XP farms, you won't get that high.

I have hit it, even with a multi-person party, but only after ToB.

1 million comes from the "Deck of Many Things" and I do lots of quests.

traps are there to be used - admittedly doing it in plain sight of an inteligent creature isn't within the spirit of the game, but otherwise it is OK.

what about using some old PnP characters?

I used the stats from a couple of old PnP characters and gave them the same proficiencies to start with.

I then Role-Played them how those characters used to behave, irrespective of how I'd usually play the game.

Hla

I don't like the fighter HLA that much - the thief gets UAI, which is one of the very best, but in a melee, I often forget to activate fighter HLA - a paladin, with summon deva is the exception - summon up deva to 'soften up' the enemy makes sense, but when you have a party, remembering to do ...

my only kensai-mage dualled at 13 - makes his fighting ability much better - the trick is the spell SPIRIT ARMOUR - I had Aerie learn 2, one for her, one for the PC - that way the AC is always decent enough before you get good levels yourself.

I agree with the poster who suggested making your party ...

Yoshimo is a bit of a disappointment - he is under a geas, so has no choice, yet can't be brought back under any circumstances - not even ToB, which is a shame, as you can get him to be a REALLY useful thief with lots of traps and high skills etc.
