Approximately: If AdditionalArmorBonus divided by TotalArmorCurrently is greater than 0.0 5 then stick with the item giving the AdditionalArmorBonus otherwise prefer the other item with + 5 % physical resistance, supposed your hero is (only) facing melee or ranged damage in the future.

Of course 'potion-food' may help here - it gives quite a lot of mana and keeps the damage moderate only, and less damage means generally less mana costs. But i guess such a pet still won't be totally mana-self-maintaining like a mage char can be (due to his/her mana regen/leech items).
