Background
There are two ways to trigger this quest: by harvesting a
Crimson Nirnroot somewhere in Blackreach (located beneath Alftand, Mzinchaleft and Raldbthar), or by reading
Sinderion's Field Journal (found in Sinderion's Field Laboratory located near the Alftand entrance to Blackreach). If you collect the
Crimson Nirnroot first, then your first objective will be to read the journal, and so the quest will basically start with the journal either way.
Walkthrough
When you read
Sinderion's Field Journal, you'll learn that Sinderion was in Blackreach to study the
Crimson Nirnroot, and that he only needed 30 more samples to brew his "greatest alchemical creation to date." You'll also learn that previously Sinderion had worked with a botanical alchemist named Avrusa Sarethi on the project. With Sinderion dead and Sarethi nowhere around, you'll decide to collect the samples on your own.
There are over 40
Crimson Nirnroot samples in Blackreach. Since they glow red, they stand out against the predominantly blue environment, and since they play a tone, you can hear them when you're nearby. That would make them pretty easy to find, except that Blackreach is large and convoluted, and it's tough to keep track of where you've been and where you need to go. The best place to start your search is the water. If you swim along the lakes and rivers of Blackreach and keep your eye on the banks, then you'll spot at least a dozen samples. However, if you really struggle to find enough
Crimson Nirnroot for the quest, then you can leave Blackreach for ten days, and when you return, all of the samples will have reset, making your task easier.
Once you've collected 30
Crimson Nirnroot, you'll be tasked with taking them to Avrusa Sarethi. You'll find her at Sarethi Farm located in between Ivarstead and Riften. When you make the delivery to Sarethi, she'll reward you with
The Nirnroot Missive, and you'll gain the active effect "Sinderion's Serendipity," which will give you a 25% chance to brew two potions instead of one when you use an alchemy lab.
