Stormcloak Quest: Liberation of Skyrim
Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest immediately after completing the Stormcloak version of the quest Battle for Whiterun.

Walkthrough

When you return to Ulfric in the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm, he'll reward you with a random enchanted weapon, and then he and Galmar Stone-Fist will give you a series of sub-quests to wrest control of Skyrim away from the Imperials. You'll then need to complete one or two quests in each region under Imperial control, and so this quest can change depending on what you decided during the quest Season Unending (if you had to complete that quest). The sub-quests are described below.

Falkreath: Rescue from Fort Neugrad

For this quest you'll need to head to the Falkreath Stormcloak Camp (located to the south of Whiterun) and report in to Galmar. Galmar will tell you that some Stormcloaks have been taken prisoner at Fort Neugrad, and he'll ask you to break them out and then take over the fort. To help you out, he'll inform you that he's already sent some men to scout out the area.

You'll find the scouts and their leader Ralof (who you might remember from the quest Unbound) waiting for you near Fort Neugrad. When you talk to Ralof, he'll tell you his plan -- that you should use an underwater entrance (located to the east of the fort) to sneak into the prison, then free the prisoners and exit to the outer courtyard where he and his men will join you, and then enter the fort proper and kill all of the remaining soldiers. However, you don't have to follow this plan if you don't want to. You'll just need to kill the Imperials and rescue the Stormcloaks, and you can do it in any way you want.

After capturing the fort, you'll need to talk to Ralof and then return to Ulfric. For your reward, you'll earn the nickname "Bone-Breaker," you'll receive a random weapon, and you'll be allowed to buy a house in Windhelm. The house will cost you 12,000 gold, and you'll need to talk to Jorleif in the palace to purchase it.

Reach: Compelling Tribute

For this quest you'll need to head to the Reach Stormcloak Camp (located between Karthwasten and Dragon Bridge) and report in to Galmar. Galmar will inform you that Raerek, the steward at Understone Keep (in Markarth), is a Talos worshipper, and he'll ask you to dig up incriminating evidence against him so you can blackmail him into aiding the Stormcloaks.

You'll find the evidence, Raerek's Inscribed Amulet of Talos, inside a dresser in Raerek's locked room in Understone Keep. When you show the amulet to Raerek, he'll reluctantly tell you about a shipment of silver and weapons currently making its way to Solitude. Then when you return to Galmar and tell him what you've learned, he'll direct you to meet up with some more of his scouts so you can capture the shipment.

You'll find the scouts -- including Ralof again -- to the east of the camp, waiting by the side of a road. When you talk to Ralof, he'll tell you that the wagon with the shipment is just down the road to the east, and then he'll tell you his plan for how to capture it. If you want, you can follow this plan, or you can tell Ralof and the other men to wait where they are while you take care of the fighting. Either way, you'll need to kill all of the Imperial soldiers near the wagon and then talk to Ralof again to complete the quest. Afterwards, when you return Galmar, he'll give you some gold for your work.

Note: If you open the locked chest on the wagon, then inside you'll find some Gold Ingots and steel weapons.

Reach: The Battle for Fort Sungard

After completing the quest "Compelling Tribute," when you report in to Galmar, he'll tell you that it's time to capture Fort Sungard, and he'll direct you to meet up with some men he has stationed there. Ralof won't be with the men this time, and so there won't be any plan. When you reach the men, they'll simply charge at the fort, and you'll need to help them defeat the Imperial soldiers who are guarding it. Enemy soldiers will keep spawning at the fort until you've killed enough, at which point any remaining soldiers will flee. Afterwards, when you return to Ulfric at the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm, he'll give you another nickname -- "Snow-Hammer" -- and anther random item.

Hjaalmarch: A False Front

For this quest you'll need to head to the Hjaalmarch Stormcloak Camp (located in between Morthal and Dawnstar) and report in to Galmar. Galmar will tell you that he wants to send some false orders to the Imperial Legate in Morthal, but that for the plan to work, he'll need to get his hands on some real orders. He'll then ask you to intercept an Imperial courier and steal his documents.

To gain access to a courier, you'll need to travel to Dragon Bridge or Rorikstead and talk to the innkeeper there. After passing a bribe, intimidate or persuade check, the innkeeper will tell you that the courier just left, and that you can either catch him on the road or wait for him to come back. The courier will then repeatedly run back and forth between Dragon Bridge and Rorikstead. Confronting the courier on the road is the easiest way to kill him without anybody noticing. You'll find the documents in his inventory.

When you present the documents to Galmar, he'll read them over and make some "corrections." He'll then ask you to deliver his version of the documents to Legate Taurinus Duilis in Highmoon Hall in Morthal. You won't need to wear a disguise or do anything tricky to make the delivery. You'll just need to travel to Morthal and talk to Duilis. Duilis will pay you 5 gold for completing the delivery, and then when you return to Galmar, you'll receive some more gold.

Hjaalmarch: The Battle for Fort Snowhawk

Once again you'll need to help Stormcloak soldiers capture a fort, and once again Imperial soldiers will keep spawning until you've killed enough. Afterwards, when you return to Ulfric at the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm, he'll give you yet another nickname -- "Stormblade" -- and he'll also give you another random object plus a full set of Stormcloak Officer armor.

Pale: The Battle for Fort Dunstad

You'll only need to complete this battle if the Imperials gained control of the Pale during the quest Season Unending.

Rift: The Battle for Fort Greenwall

You'll only need to complete this battle if the Imperials gained control of the Rift during the quest Season Unending.

Winterhold: The Battle for Fort Kastav

You'll only need to complete this battle if the Imperials gained control of Winterhold during the quest Season Unending.

Haafingar: The Battle for Fort Hraggstad

For this quest you'll need to travel to the Haafingar Stormcloak Camp (located near Dragon Bridge) and report in to Galmar. Galmar will direct you to capture Fort Hraggstad, and this battle will proceed just like the other battles you've completed recently.

Haafingar: Battle for Solitude

After completing the quest "The Battle for Fort Hraggstad," when you report in to Galmar, he'll direct you to meet up with Ulfric near Solitude. The node for Solitude won't be on the world map, so you'll have to fast travel to a location nearby, like Katla's Farm.

When you reach Ulfric, he'll rally the troops, and he'll wave everybody forward. You'll then need to enter Solitude and fight your way to Castle Dour, breaking through some barricades along the way. You'll find General Tullius inside the castle. He'll be with Legate Rikke, and you'll have to defeat them both with Ulfric and Galmar helping you to complete the battle. At the end, Ulfric will allow you to kill Tullius, but it won't make any difference what you decide to do. If you don't kill Tullius, then Ulfric will.

Afterwards, Ulfric will give you a random enchanted weapon, and then he'll ask you to accompany him outside so he can make a speech to his men. Once again, it won't make any difference what you decide to do. Either way, Ulfric will leave it up to the Moot to decide the new High King, and he'll spare Jarl Elisif and allow her to continue ruling Solitude. Ulfric's speech will conclude the civil war.
