Walkthrough
When you meet with Arngeir in High Hrothgar (#1), he'll probably make some disparaging remarks about the Blades, and he'll inform you that he can't teach you the "Dragonrend" shout required to defeat Alduin because he doesn't know it. But then (perhaps with a nudge from Einarth) he'll recommend that you meet with Paarthurnax, the leader of their order, who might have the information you need.
The Greybeards will then lead you to the courtyard behind High Hrothgar (#2), where they'll teach you the Words of Power for "Clear Skies." You'll need to use this shout as you make your way up to Paarthurnax at the top of the mountain. Each time you use the shout, you'll briefly clear away the snowstorms blocking your way, which will allow you to continue forward. Along with the snowstorms, you'll also have to deal with some ice wraiths and a frost troll.
At the summit (#3), you'll meet Paarthurnax, an ancient dragon. He'll first want to verify that you're dragonborn, and so he'll direct you to a Word Wall, where you'll unlock and learn a Word of Power for "Fire Breath." After using this shout on Paarthurnax to demonstrate that you've understood it, Paarthurnax will inform you that he doesn't actually know the "Dragonrend" shout -- because being a dragon, he can't comprehend it.
However, all is not lost. Paarthurnax will go on to tell you something of the history of the "Dragonrend" shout, how the nords used it on Alduin to weaken him, and then used an
Elder Scroll to "cast him adrift on the currents of time." Paarthurnax will then speculate that if you were able to get your hands on an
Elder Scroll, then you'd be able to use it to go back in time and learn the "Dragonrend" shout from the nords who created it.
Note: After completing the quest, you'll be able to tell Paarthurnax that you'd like to meditate on a Word of Power, and you'll get three options, each of which will give you an active bonus:
- Feim (Eternal Spirit). When you're ethereal, you'll recover health 25% faster.
- Fus (Force Without Effort). You'll stagger 25% less often, and your foes will stagger 25% more often.
- Yol (The Fire Within). The "Fire Breath" shout will cause 25% more damage.
If you don't like your selection, then you can talk to Paarthurnax again and choose a different word.
1 - High Hrothgar
2 - Courtyard
3 - The Throat of the World
