Ok, it works fine. You need to make the Portraits folder if you dont have one. And then just add the picturs like the readme above said. Don't do it...

There is no helmet skill in this game, and as far as I can tell, there is no arcane spellcasting failure chance either.

Helmets look really good on dwarves. It should be some sort of rule- dwarves are required to wear helmets. With horns. Yes, definitely with horns....

all of the other races start at 1000 exp til next level, but 5000 exp brings my gnome to 5000 exp away. is this wrong?

It says you don't get level 6 spells until level 28. Since I am building my paladin with 4 levels of fighter, I am thinking it isn't worth giving him...
