The Missing Magician's Apprentice

Background

When you return to the Thurstone Tollgate after completing Healing for Ardo, the Archmage Rakorium has appeared just north of the docks. He can't travel on as he is missing his apprentice, who he calls Nottel. Go search for the apprentice by the Stone Circle.


1 - Magical Defenses

Five giant stag beetles teleport in and attack you.


2 - Magical Defenses

Five fireflies teleport in and attack you.


3 - Novice Nottel

Novice Nottel (actually, Ungfred, but still) is trapped inside the stone circle. Go back to Archmage Rakorium for help, and he will give you Rakorium's Might Cave Opener (it's a pickaxe), netting you one AP. Use it to remove one the boulder.


4 - Boulder

When you approach it with Rakorium's Mighty Cave Opener, five emerald spiders appear.


5 - Marawamir ay Elburum

A mage who rants on about an enemy, apparently his former aid, and that you should help him gather the ingredients, not the other one.


6 - Emerald Spiders

Four emerald spiders (small ones) and one large emerald spider teleport in. When you kill the large one, he drops the quest item A Strange Tuber, one of the ingredients for the ritual.


7 - Marawamir ay Elburum

The other side of Marawamir ay Elburum's personality is an arrogant skeletal mage. Like the light side, he asks for your help.


8 - Giant Scorpion

A giant scorpion teleports in. Defeat him for the quest item Strange Berries.


9 - Giant Crab

A giant crab teleports in. Defeat him for the quest item a Strange Leaf.


10 - Beetles

Four giant stag beetles and a giant forest beetle teleport in. Kill the giant forest beetle and he drops the quest item Exotic Blooms.


11 - Fireflies

Four fireflies and one big firefly teleport in. Kill the big firefly and he drops the quest item a Rare Herb.


12 - Magic Stone Circle

The five ingredients must be placed in the correct order to help either incarnation of Marawim. If you place the ingredients in a random, wrong order Marawim's mind will be put into Nottel's body, essentially failing the ritual subquest. You can still return to Rakorium and tell him Nottel is not coming back, netting you 20AP.

To help the light incarnations of Marawim, start at the largest stone in the northwest corner, then going counterclockwise place the following ingredients: leaf, berry, blooms, herb, tuber. This nets you 70AP and the Ring of Life.

To help the dark incarnations of Marawim, start at the largest stone in the northwest corner, then going counterclockwise place the following ingredients: tuber, herb, blooms, berry, leaf. This nets you 20AP, and the incarnation will then turn on you, summoning two skeletons, one skeleton mage and three skeleton archers to aid him.

Regardless of who you chose to help, Nottel makes his way back to Rakorium. Use Rakorium's Mighty Cave Opener to remove the boulder at the exit and make your way back to the harbor. Talk to Rakorium for 40AP and Nottel's Potion.
