Background

You'll receive this quest from a Nilfgaardian woman at the Nilfgaardian Army Group "Center" Camp in Velen East (#1).


Walkthrough

The woman will inform you that her son Hrodberth is missing from the Nilfgaardian army, but that the army hasn't even tried looking for him. Odder still, she'll tell you that the quartermaster insists that Hrodberth left the camp to do some scouting and never returned -- when in fact he was part of the light cavalry and shouldn't have been doing any scouting at all. So she'll ask you to help her, and she'll describe Hrodberth as having red hair.

To get Quartermaster Eggebracht (#2) to talk, you'll either need to bribe him or use Axii on him. He'll tell you that Hrodberth and several other soldiers deserted, but that only a few of them were found and executed. He'll suspect that the remaining soldiers died in the swamp.

To track down Hrodberth, you'll need to head into the swamp (#3) and turn on your witcher senses. You'll spot some tracks leading to a hanged man with red hair. You'll conclude that it's probably Hrodberth. On the ground next to the man you'll find an Unsent Letter to "Mother" from "H." This will confirm your suspicions.

When you return to the Nilfgaardian woman, you'll have two choices. You can either tell her the truth, or you can lie and say that Hrodberth died in battle. The woman will like the second answer better, but either way you'll receive 50 crowns and 10 xp for completing the quest.
