Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!
This part of the city shelters the city gates which lead to Wyrm's Crossing. All travelers coming from the South first pass through it. It is also the part of the city where the thieves chose to establish their guild, being reasonably far from the Flaming Fist Castle. There are also a good number of shops and a high selection of wares in this part of town, keeping the shoppers happy. There are two things the author of these lines wishes to point out. First, don't get too carried away by all the magnificent wares and spend all your hard earned money. Instead, see what your needs are as you explore the city and then decide what to buy. Second, be careful if you decide to do a bit of thieving. The guards are called very often and you'll then have to fight them. On that, I hope that you enjoy your stay at the Gate.
1- ELMINSTER:
Once more, the enigmatic Elminster greets you as you are about to begin an important part of the story. He tells you a bit about Gorion and how he was before he adopted you. He also tells you that you can trust both Scar and Duke Eltan in Baldur's Gate. He then takes his leave, once more.
2- LUCKY AELLO'S DISCOUNT STORE:
Lucky Aello: Tells you that if you can find an item cheaper than in his store this side of Calimshan it will probably kill you. What he omits to tell you is that so will his own items! He has a good selection of cursed potions and scrolls, if you are interested. The only potion you can safely use is the Potion of Perception.
3- NICKLOS:
A thief who tells you that his boss, Alatos "Ravenscar" Thuibuld, wishes to talk with you. He *gives* you 50 gp. just to listen to his invitation. Should you accept, he asks you to follow him into the guild and also tells you that the password is "Fafhrd".
4, 5, 6, 7- ENTRANCES TO THE THIEVES' GUILD:
These 4 houses serve to cover up the main guild. In each you'll meet a thief who asks for the password, which is "Fafhrd". If you don't get it right(why shouldn't you, you're reading this walkthrough aren't you?) prepare for a fight. Also note that there is a Potion of Firebreath in a barrel at entrance 6. From each of the houses there is an entrance to the guild.
8- THIEVES' GUILD:
There is a lot to do here and if your PC is a thief it should be an interesting place to be since it is a bit like your stronghold. Otherwise, it is still interesting and there is quite some experience to be gained.
Alatos "Ravenscar" Thuibuld: He is the leader of the guild and the man who asked Nicklos to recruit you. He offers you a job and be careful with what you say because there is a chance that he attacks you(to get the quest, choose the following dialog options: 2-1-2-1). To make a long story short, lets just say that a local mage named Shandolar has discovered how to build Halruaan Skyships and that he is willing to sell the 3 ingredients required to the Grand Duke Liia Jannath in about 10 days. Of course, the Halruaans are not happy about it and have sent one of their mages, Resar, to prevent the transaction. Resar then asked for Alatos' help and he recruited you. What you have to do is to steal the 3 ingredients from Oberan's Estate, located in the Central part of Baldur's Gate (see that section for more details).
Once you have done so, return to Alatos for your "reward". It doesn't matter if you actually killed the 3 girls guarding the ingredients or not. In any case you get 4000 Exp. and Resar attacks you so that no traces are left. If you have done Narlen's quests, he will come to your rescue and kill Resar, claiming that you are a member of the guild. Alatos will then apologize and give you full run of the guild.
Resar: An insolent Halruaan mage. Once you have done Alatos' quest he will attack you. However, if you have also done Narlen Darkwalk's 2 quests he will come to your rescue and kill Resar, claiming that you are a full member of the guild. You'll then be able to collect a Wand of Paralyzation off Resar's body.
Narlen Darkwalk: A thief who wants to test your thieving skills. Accept and he'll give you as first quest to meet him at dusk near the Splurging Sturgeon, in the North-Eastern part of Baldur's Gate. Only 1 thief from your party has to come and meet him, else he won't leave the shadows. He will then asks you to watch out while he and another thief are stealing from a house. The quest is pretty straightforward: just wait in front of the house till a Flaming Fist Mercenary comes and asks you what you're doing there. You should then answer "'Ere boys!…"(choice 1) to warn the thieves inside the house. Don't fight the soldier, else you'll lose reputation. Instead, just run to the edge of the map and change locations. When you return to the guild, Narlen gives you 100 gp. and congratulates you on a job well done.
You then get a second quest, which involves meeting Narlen at dusk near the Blade and Stars, in the South-Eastern part of town. Only 1 thief from your party has to come and Narlen then explains that a jeweler named Gantolandan recently acquired a Rogue Stone(worth 2500 gp.!) and intends to sell it to a local mage. Your task is to enter the house and to get the stone. See that section of the city for more details. When you have the stone, return at the guild and Narlen will give you 3 Pearls in exchange (the Pearls are only worth 300 gp., looks like somebody got more than his share in this story!).
After doing these 2 quests, the other thieves will consider you as one of their own and Narlen will intervene in your favor at the end of Alatos' quest.
Husam: A thief who claims to have lost his store, money and wife because of the Iron Throne. He has a bit of information about them including the names of their 3 leaders: Rieltar Costak, Brunos and Thaldorn. He also tells you that Sarevok is Rieltar's son(well, foster son) and that the 3 leaders are in Candlekeep because of an *important* affair. Obviously, he seems to know too much and you'll discover in Chapter 7 that Husam is in fact a Shadow Thief from Amn sent to investigate the problems in the region. He also tells you to meet him at the Elfsong Tavern if you have more questions for him.
Black Lily: The official supplier of the guild, if I may say so. She has a very good selection of wares including: Darts +1, Darts of Stunning, Sling +1, Bullets +1, Bullets +2, Arrows of Dispelling, Arrows +2, Arrows +1, Arrows of Bitting, Studded Leather +1, Leather +1 and Cloak of Protection +1. She also has a vast selection of potions and can identify items for you. Note that her prices are higher than those you'd get in the rest of the city if you have a high charisma and a good reputation. If you have a bad reputation, she might offer the best prices but I'm not sure.
Barrel: Behind Black Lily there is a barrel containing the Manual of Quickness of Action (Dexterity +1, permanent).
Chests: There are a few chests in the guild and most are trapped. You'll find 10 Bullets +1 and 6 Bullets +2 in one of them.
Entrance to Thieves' Maze: The entrance to the maze is also in the guild but you won't be able to access it before Chapter 7.

Quests: Note that if you give him a Lock of Nymph Hair and 100 gp. he will give you a Nymph's Cloak in exchange (+2 charisma). Alternatively you can also sell him the Lock of Nymph's Hair for 500 gp. if you are not interested by the cloak.
Ordulinian: A cleric who tells you a bit about Arkion and Nemphre, 2 necromancers causing trouble at the Gate. He doesn't give you any quests but should you bring him Arkion's bloodstone amulet and Nemphre' onyx ring you get 3500 Exp. but not the cloak he had promised you. You also get to keep the amulet and the ring, so you can sell them if you wish.
2nd Floor:
Niemain, William Garst, Wheber Ott and Oulam: Four mages preparing a ritual. They get angry because you have disturbed them and you'll have to prepare yourself for a fight(although it can be avoided by choosing the following dialog options: 2-1). They are not really hard but still cast such things as Horror and Melf's Acid Arrows. One way of defeating them is to cast Resist Fear on your party and then have your best fighter drink an Oil of Speed. The mages will fall like nothing! All in all, you get 5400 Exp. for killing them and 835 gp., 2 Mage Robes of Fire Resistance, Mage Robe of Cold Resistance, Mage Robe of Electrical Resistance, Wand Of Fire, Dagger +1, 5 Darts of Stunning, 2 Identify scrolls and 2 Luck scrolls. Be careful as the ring is cursed. You can then sell everything downstairs for a good amount of gold.
Note: If Xzar is in your party the mages won't attack you since he's a member of their group.
12- ELFSONG TAVERN:
1st Floor:
Brevlik: A cunning gnome collector who wants you to steal the Telescope on display at the Hall of Wonders in the Western part of Baldur's Gate. He offers you 500 gp. and you can bargain to add one of his magic items to the deal. The best way to steal the telescope is to go to the hall at dusk. You'll find Alora there and you can either accept to stand watch for her or tell her to get lost, in which case she'll leave. Once you have the Telescope, bring it to Brevlik for 500 gp., a Wand of Lightning and 5500 Exp.
Husam: If you talked with him at the thieves' guild you'll meet him once more here. He offers to tell you more information about the Iron Throne but ends up by suggesting that you visit their headquarters in the Southern part of Baldur's Gate. He then takes his leave.
Bartender:
Inn: All 4 rooms available.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
2nd Floor:
Cyrdemac: A rogue blackmailing Areana, a noblewoman you can find at the Three Old Kegs (Northern part of BG), because he saw her at the Undercellar. You can kill him for 975 Exp. and a Bastar Sword +1. You can then return to Areana for her reward or take over the blackmailing yourself if you are evil.
Alyth: She is the owner of the establishment and either tells you a bit about the customers or about the reasons why she bought the place. If you talk with her twice, she offers the same services as the Bartender downstairs.
Merchant: One of the merchants you met at the Nashkel carnival has traveled to Baldur's Gate and offers you his fine collection of wares: Necklace of Missiles, Amulet of Protection +1, Shield Amulet, Ring of Infravision and some Protection Scrolls. You can also buy back anything you sold him in Nashkel, should you be interested.
Chests: There is a bit of gold to be stolen but be careful not to be heard, else the guards will be summoned.

Arkion: An evil necromancer who is the old rival of Nemphre. He gives you as a quest to go down in the sewers and bring him a corpse. Do so and he'll give you 250 gp. and 1800 Exp.
