Baldur's Gate (Northwestern)

Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

In this part of the city you're going to encounter the tougher quests so I recommend leaving it for the end. The points of interest are Degrodel's house, the Helm and Cloak inn as well as Entar Silvershield's estate, which is a real must visit for any thief! There's also some good loot all around this area so keep your eyes opened.

Important characters:
- Grand Duke Entar Silvershield (LG, Human Male, Fighter 5th level)

1- QUINN'S HOUSE:

1st Floor:

Quinn: This halfling wanted to come to the Gate with his friend Nestor to do a bit of commerce and to sell a Shandon Gem(only worth 45 gp.) but unfortunately they got ambushed by some Ankhegs near Wyrm's Crossing and even though he escaped his friend was not so lucky. Quinn asks you to go there and retrieve one of Nestor's items so that he can bury it (see Wyrm's Crossing for more details). You get 950 Exp., +1 Reputation and the Shandon Gem for bringing him Nestor's dagger.

Chest: There is a scroll of Horror in a chest near Quinn. The guards won't be summoned.

2nd Floor:

Chests: There is a Long Bow +1 in one of the chests upstairs. There is also a Potion of Magic Protection in another one.

2- HOUSE:

There is a Potion of Healing on the second floor of this house.

3- HELM AND CLOAK:

1st Floor:

Bartender:
Rooms: the 4 types of rooms are available.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.

Note: After being attacked by the Maulers of Undermountain the bartender sometimes becomes hostile towards you. Don't kill him or you lose reputation!

Chest: There is a chest in the kitchen which contains 450 gp. and 2 gems. Be sure to charm the cook and to get him out of there before plundering it, else the guards will be summoned.

Gorpel Hind, Farluck, Nelik and Turpin: The 4 members of the party known as the Merry Fools. Talking to them triggers the entry of the Maulers of Undermountain(another party of adventurers) so be ready for a fight(and a tough one too!). If you have told Gorpel and his comrades a story about your adventures in the Cloakwood forest he will help you in the upcoming fight.

Gretek, Wilf, Arlin, Caturak, Pargus and Nader: A bunch of psychos who are known as the Maulers of Undermountain. They attack you almost on sight and they are pretty tough. There is 1 melee fighter, 1 archer, 1 cleric, 1 mage, 1 thief and 1 fighter/mage in their group. Your best bet if to position your party on the opposite side of the room and to summon enough monsters to hold them back(do this prior to the fight). Then cast Haste on your party and some protection spells like Bless, Aid, Chant, Draw Upon Holly Might, Protection from Evil, etc… Once the fight begins take your enemies down with missile weapons. The most spells you cast on your party, the easier will be the fight. You get 5250 Exp. from this encounter and some good loot: Battle Axe +2, Bracers of Defense AC7, Long Sword +1, 2 Plate Mails, Adventurer's Robe, some Arrows of Fire and some Arrows of Ice(about 10-15 in total). As I said previously, if you told the Merry Fools the story of your adventures in the Cloakwood forest they will help you a bit in the fight.

2nd Floor, Part A:

Sarah: An emissary from Amn who has been sent to settle the misunderstanding between her nation and Baldur's Gate, a city of "barbarians" according to her. She is so important that her room is guarded by 2 guards.

Chest: 195 gp. and an Angel Skin Ring.

2nd Floor, Part B:

Painting: Be careful as the painting is trapped (Fireball spell). Behind it you'll find the Helm of Balduran (one of the best items in the game). You can then bring it back to Degrodel at location (5) for your reward.

4- OCELLIS:

Tells you that the declaration of war between Amn and Baldur's Gate is presently discussed by the Grand Dukes but that it is just a means to negotiate better prices for the imported iron.

5- DEGRODEL'S HOUSE:

3 Invisible Stalkers, 2 Helmed Horrors and 2 Doom Guards: Yes, you've read well! This fight is mega hard even if you are well prepared(i.e. Haste spell and some other cleric protection spells). Your best bet here is to summon monsters and undead to hold back the enemies while you fight them. All are almost immune to missile weapons but vulnerable to magic. They also do tons of damage. Charge them with melee weapons and note that the Wand of Frost also comes in handy. In the end you get 17000 Exp. for this fight but no real loot.

Degrodel: Congratulates you for passing his guardians(wonder how a silly mage like him got so powerful guardians…) and offers you a quest. It appears that some time ago a party of adventurers who tried to brake in Ramazith's tower were turned into stone. What Ramazith didn't know was that one of them had the Helm of Balduran in his possession. Afterwards the petrified adventurers were sold as statues to Felonius Gist, a local nobleman who's estate is located just west of the market place(see Central part of BG for more details). Degrodel gives you 6 scrolls of Stone to Flesh and orders you to go and retrieve the helm from them. He offers you 5000 gp. for the job.

Since he doesn't have the 5000 gp. on him, your best course of action is to recuperate the helm and to give it to him. He then gives you the money and summons 2 Doom Guards, 1 Helmed Horror and 1 Invisible Stalker to escort you to the exit. Kill him before he leaves to get the helm back and a Mage Robe of Electrical Resistance. Then dispatch his servants for a further 9000 Exp.

Cupboard: There is a Splint Mail +1 in the cupboard. Wait till you've killed Degrodel to get it so that the guards don't get summoned.

6- HOUSE:

There is an Amulet of Protection +1 on a shelf of the kitchen.

7- BARREL (LOCATION: X 1611, Y 2601):

There is a Color Spray scroll in this barrel.

8- HOUSE:

Pheirkas: A dwarven female who wants you to go to the Feldpost's Inn in Beregost and steal Algernon's Cloak off the poor man's back. She also tells you not to kill him. I think that you would be better off keeping the cloak but if you decide to hand it over you get 300 Exp. and 200 gp.

9- GARDNER:

Tells you to get off Entar Silvershield's lawn.

10- ENTAR SILVERSHIELD'S ESTATE:

It appears that the Grand Duke is not at home… Perfect for a bit of thievery. His estate is full of wealth and the only thing you need to remember if you don't want the Flaming Fists on your back is to charm whoever is in the room you wish to loot and to send him out(that way, even after the enchantment is dispelled the person doesn't call the guards). Also, if you don't want the servants and the guards to call the Flaming Fists just tell them that you are Entar's business partners from Waterdeep.

1st Floor:

2 Servants and 2 Guards: Tell them that you are Entar's business partners from Waterdeep and they'll let you by.

Chest in western room: 386 gp., 1 gem and 2 necklaces.

Other chest in western room: 254 gp., Potion of Magic Blocking, Cursed Potion of Invulnerability and a Moonbar gem.

2nd Floor:

Brilla: She is Entar's wife and if you enter her room directly by using the stairs she calls the guards no matter what. If you use the other stairs and access her room by the door you can tell her that you are her husband's associates from Waterdeep and she'll let you go. There is nothing of interest in her room.

Skie: Skie (TN, Human Female, Thief) is Entar's daughter and the lover of Eldoth. She'll only join you if he's in your party, else she'll think that you are some brigands and summon 4 guards. If you want Skie but not Eldoth, here's how to do: go into the Western part of the Cloakwood forest, drop the NPC you want Skie to replace and pick up Eldoth. Come back to Entar's Estate, talk with Skie, pick her up in your party, drop an NPC you're on good terms with and then kill Eldoth. Remove him from your party and take back the NPC you just dropped. Et voila! You have Skie. Her thieving skills are too spread out but she is better than Alora because her strength is a bit higher. She is also less annoying even though she is a spoiled and naive child.

Cupboard in Skie's room: 359 gp., Pearl Necklace, Water Opal, Potion of Freedom, Elixir of Health, Oil of Speed and a gem.

Chest in Skie's room: 308 gp. and a Cloak of Protection +1.

Other chest in Skie's room: 154 gp. and Laeral's Tear Necklace (worth 3000 gp.).

11- HOUSE:

Laerta and Louise: Two twins who are annoyed because a buggeyman is coming to spy on them at night. Talking with the twins triggers the entry of Gervisse, an evil mage who tells you that the druid Voltine has dark plans for the twins. Voltine then appears and tells you that Gervisse is the real danger and that he should be removed. At this point you have 2 choices:

Kill Gervisse (recommended): You get 900 Exp. for doing so and his Mage Robe of Fire Resistance. Voltine then gives you a Wand of Polymorphing and the twins give you 1000 Exp. and a scroll of Protection from Evil.

Kill Voltine: You get 60 Exp. and a Wand of Polymorphing off her corpse. Gervisse gives you nothing and the twins give you 1000 Exp. and the scroll of Protection from Evil.

Cupboard: There is a Splint Mail +1 in the cupboard in one of the rooms. Be careful as the guards are usually summoned.

12- HOUSE:

There is a Potion of Insight in the cupboard downstairs. The guards won't be summoned.

13- TAVERN AND INN:

1st Floor:

Connoly Finn: Offers to tell you a story but feels insulted by whatever you say and ends up by saying nothing (which is probably as well).

Bartender:
Rooms: the 4 types of rooms are available.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.

2nd Floor:

Borinole Mann: An old man who tells you a story about the Firewine ruins and the Ulcaster school which has no beginning and no ending (and no point either).

Chest: There is a Potion of Defense in one of the chests.
