Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!
Strange things happen in one's life, and even stranger when he is the child of a God. After exploring the entire Sword Coast from West to East and from North to South in order to discover the evil which plagues it you now return to Candlekeep, your starting point. You'll probably see things from a different angle this time through. You're no longer the lonely kid who spent his years inside the keep's austere walls but a young adventurer who tries to discover himself and his heritage. Be careful as danger is now inside Candlekeep and no longer outside.
Important characters:
- The Keeper of the Tomes, Ulraunt (LN, Human Male, Wizard 9th level)
- The First Reader, Tethtoril (LG, Human Male, Priest of Mystra 18th level)
- The Chanter and the Voices of the North, South, West and East
- The Gatewarden
1- KEEPER OF THE PORTAL:
He requires that you donate a tome of great value to access the library. The book you received from Duke Eltan in Baldur's Gate will be fine. He also greets you and asks you to "please have your less civilized friends refrain from causing trouble". You are then teleported inside Candlekeep.
2- TEMPLE OF OGHMA:
Priest of Oghma: Offers all the basic services of a temple. Be careful as he is not easy to spot at first glance (he is on the right side of the pool).
3- DREPPIN:
Asks you how life has been since you have left the keep. There is not much to this conversation(this time through his cow is just fine!).
4- PRIEST'S QUARTERS:
Priest of Oghma: He is surrounded by some cats and is even studying a dead one! If you push him on his motives he gets angry and reveals his true nature: a doppleganger. The first of many you'll meet before you leave Candlekeep. Dispatch him for 420 Exp.
5- CANDLEKEEP INN:
1st Floor:
Reevor: This retired soldier will probably never lose his army habits. As soon as he sees you he orders that you do 500 push-ups (he's just joking… well I think he is… isn't he?).
Winthrop: Be prepared as another of his boring jokes is awaiting you!
Rooms: All 4 types of rooms are available.
Shop: Yes.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: Yes.
2nd Floor:
Chest: There is a Diamond(worth 500 gp.) in one of the chests and a few other treasures in the others. The guards won't be summoned.
6- BARRACKS:
You won't be able to access them before you get arrested in the central keep (see location (13) for more details). Once you're in prison Ulraunt comes to meet you and just assumes that you're guilty of the murder of Rieltar, Brunos and their friends. He says that one of the guests, Koveras(really Sarevok spelled backwards), saw you leaving the scene of the crime. He tells you that you'll be sent to Baldur's Gate tomorrow and that you'll be severely punished.
A few seconds later Tethtoril comes and talks with you. He says that he knows you've been framed(whether it's true or not) and offers to teleport you in a room of the library leading to the catacombs beneath Candlekeep. If you ask why he can't teleport you outside the citadel's walls he says that the magic shield surrounding the keep would detect your presence and that you'd be arrested. You are then teleported in the small room leading to the catacombs. Search it for the following scrolls: Chromatic Orb, Confusion, Dimension Door, Agannazar's Scorcher, Lightning Bolt, Fireball, Minor Globe of Invulnerability and Monster Summoning II. Note that you won't be able to come back in Candlekeep after this point.
7- HULL:
Another of your old "friends" who asks how life has been since you left Candlekeep. He also tells you that he went with Fuller to look for you after he heard of Gorion's death but that you were gone.
8- BUNKHOUSE:
Parda: The old sage of Candlekeep tells you that something is wrong inside the keep's walls but that he doesn't know what, as though he had a 6th sense. He then asks you to investigate it.
9- KEEP'S CLINIC:
Fuller: He too asks you what you've been up to in the last few weeks. If you tell him about the Iron Throne leaders who have a meeting in the central keep he says that he hasn't heard anything and asks you to leave.
Desk: There are 2 Potions of Healing on the desk. Act quickly as the guards will be summoned.
10- CADDERLY:
One of the visitors of Candlekeep who was an old friend of Gorion. He reveals that Gorion was a Harper in his days, which explains why he knew Elminster, Jaheira and Khalid. He then asks you a bit about yourself and leaves.
11- PHLYDIA:
As absent minded as ever. She doesn't seem to remember if you actually returned her book or not. She isn't even sure if you were around lately or not.
12- CHANTER AND THE 4 VOICES
13- CENTRAL KEEP - LIBRARY:
What you must know before entering the keep is that you'll be arrested later by the guards for the murder of Rieltar, Brunos, Kestor and Tuth, whether you did it or not. There are 2 ways this will happen: if you talk with Koveras on the 2nd floor and accept the ring he gives you or if you actually kill the 4 men on the 3rd floor. Variations of these 2 scenarios, like talking with Koveras or with the Iron Throne leaders, may also lead to your arrest but I am not totally sure. If you wish to explore the upper levels of the keep before being arrested(and to loot them as well…) avoid any contact with Koveras and the Iron Throne leaders and go straight up the keep once you've explore the first level. Loot as much as you can and then decide what to do. Killing the Iron Throne leaders doesn't really affect the rest of the story as you'll be accused of their murder anyway. You might as well do it, gain some experience and loot them if you're going to be imprisoned anyway.
1st Floor:
Statue of Alaundo the Wise: The wise Alaundo, who predicted the problems resulting of the Time of Troubles when the Gods were forced to walk on the face of Faerun in mortal forms and who later founded Candlekeep, has been immortalized in many statues on this level of the keep.
Reader: Tells you that 3 men of the Iron Throne meet each day on the 3rd floor to discuss their business matters (actually they are 4).
Karan: Your old tutor is rather happy to see you. He warns you against a new guest named Koveras who knows Alaundo's prophecies by heart and who takes more interest in the guests of the keep than in the readings (Koveras is really Sarevok spelled backwards).
Theodon: An old priest who remembers the time when you were a child. If you're nice with him he goes on, and on, and on, and on(you see the picture) about the good old time till you get really bored. If you're rude with him he leaves.
Shelves: Search the shelves for the following scrolls: Vocalize, Chill Touch, Knock and Web. You can also find Alaundo's prophecies around. If you played through the whole Baldur's Gate Series you'll be stunned as how accurate they are (after all the guys at Bioware wrote the prophecies AND the game…).
2nd Floor:
Koveras: He says that he was one of Gorion's assistants when he was still alive and tries to give you a ring which Gorion wanted you to have. If you question his sayings and tell him that he knows a lot about what happened the night Gorion died he insults you and leaves. If you accept the ring know that it is a plain Ring of Protection +1. Speaking with Koveras usually triggers your arrest on one of the upper levels of the keep so you might as well avoid him.
Chanter: If you really insist he tells you about the catacombs beneath Candlekeep and also warns you against them because of the numerous traps which have been placed in the passages.
Shelves: You'll find the following scrolls on this level: Chromatic Orb, Melf's Acid Arrow, Mirrored Image and Luck.
3rd Floor:
Rieltar, Brunos, Kestor and Tuth: Rieltar and Brunos are of the leaders of the Iron Throne in the region while Tuth and his associate belong to another organization. They ask you to leave because they are discussing private matters but if you provoke them(choices: 2-1) they will fight. Rieltar is a mage but he is easy to dispatch and is worth 975 Exp. Brunos and Tuth are both fighter who can do some damage to your party. Casting Horror or summoning monster to hold them back might be a good idea. Brunos is worth 1400 Exp. while Tuth is worth 4000 Exp. Finally Kestor is a rogue worth 1200 Exp. They have some good loot on them including: over 1800 gp., Chainmail +1, Morning Star +1, Plate Mail, Long Sword +1. 2 Medium Shields +1, 15 Darts of Stunning and some potions: Potion of Genius, Potion of Clarity and Potion of Frost Giant Strength. Since you're going to be accused of their murder anyway you might as well do it for the experience and the loot. I recommend exploring the upper levels of the keep before dispatching them, though.
Shelves: You'll find the following scrolls on this level: Luck, Shield and Identify.
4th Floor:
Rooms: Loot the rooms for the following treasures: Potion of Fortitude, Wand of Fear, Grease scroll, Blindness scroll, Web scroll and Detect Invisibility scroll. Be careful not to be seen by the monks on the level.
Shistal: A monk who does not recognize you and who's rather rude. If you question him a bit he eventually gets angry and turns into a Greater Doppleganger. He is worth 4000 Exp. but he also casts spells so watch out!
5th Floor:
Piato: A monk who seems to recognize you and who greets you warmly. He tells you to check Gorion's room, the 3rd in the Southern corridor, for anything he might have left for you.
Gorion's Room: There is a letter which explains once and for all that you are a child of Bhaal and that your father's blood runs through your veins. He also warns you against Sarevok, another Bhaal child, who was educated in Candlekeep and knows who you are.
Other room: There is a Potion of Defense and a Cloak of Protection +1 in one of the rooms.
6th Floor:
Gatewarden: Tells you that someone wishes to meet you inside the outer grounds but I've never discovered who it was, maybe Cadderly.
Shelves: Search the shelves around this level for the following scrolls: Ghost Armor, Protection from Normal Missiles and Protection from Petrification (save for later in the catacombs).
Tethtoril's room: He tells you to visit your late father's room on the 5th floor. He also tells you that you need to have a serious conversation later but that he's busy at the moment. Search his room for a Ring of Protection +1 and a Wand of Magic Missiles.
Ulraunt's room: This mage is as snobbish as a good nobleman from Waterdeep. He doesn't even know your name and prefers to call you "child of Gorion". Loot his room for 1025 gp., Potion of Healing, Elixir of Health and Potion of Fire Resistance.
Once you've talked with Koveras or killed the 4 men on the 3rd floor a Watcher will meet you on one of the levels and arrest you. You'll then be taken to the barracks at location (6). See that location for more details on what awaits you.
