Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!
This area is probably where the poorest men in Baldur's Gate live. There are a lot of beggars around as well as the Blushing Mermaid, the most dubious inn in town. There are a lot of quests to do, though.
1- MAREK AND LOTHANDER:
Two assassins working for the Iron Throne. They only wish to warn you that you'll have trouble if you continue to seek the destruction of their employers. This encounter also triggers a long quest which sees you help Lothander remove his geas and kill Marek for the antidote to the poison he gave you. You don't have to do anything till you meet Lothander at the market place (Central part of BG), though.
2- THE COUNTING HOUSE:
See our
ToSC walkthrough for more details about this place.
3- SHOP:
Storekeeper: Basic weapons and armor, Plate Mail and Large Shield +1.
Loot: This shop is like a "thief's dream"! There is a lot of loot around: Potion of Absorption, Potion of Invulnerability, Potion of Mind Focusing, Mace +1, Potion of Healing, 4 Arrows of Dispelling, 7 Arrows of Biting and a Potion of Hill Giant Strength. No guards are summoned!
4- BLUSHING MERMAID:
1st Floor:
Larze: A big brute who is actually quite dumb. This Ogre is a bounty hunter who wants to kill you (of course!). You can actually convince him that you're not the one he seeks and that he should go and check the picture again(choices: 1-2)! You get 900 Exp. for doing so. You can then kill him before he reaches the door for 2000 Exp., Gauntlets of Weapon Skill, Angel Skin Ring and a few other treasures. If you decide to fight him from the beginning, be careful as he is a juggernaut who does massive damage to your party.
Bork:
Rooms: Peasant, Merchant and Noble rooms are offered.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
Vivienne: Tells you how her husband got killed while plowing his land because of the bad quality of the iron. She then leaves. Check the chest in her room for 350 gp., Dagger +1 and Gold Ring.
Entrance to Undercellar: There is an entrance to the Undercellar in Vivienne's room (this way you don't have to travel through the sewers). The guard will ask you 10 gp. when you enter or you can leave.
2nd Floor:
Marek: Marek will be there once you helped Lothander and met him at the Blade and Stars(see South-Eastern part of BG for more details). At the end of the conversation you get 10000 Exp. and a message tells you that you have been cured of the poison. You then have to kill Marek for 650 Exp., 201 gp., Dagger +2, Eagle Bow, Marek's potion of antidote(about 10 uses), Potion of Freedom and Potion of Master Thievery.
Gamesman (craps): You win about 50% of the time.
Gamesman (big wheel): You don't even win 1/10 times but when you do you get 20 times your bet! I don't recommend playing because you'll mostly lose.
5- ILMATER'S SHRINE:
In Chapter 7 the priest will guide you to the Undercellar. For the time being there is nothing of interest.
6- HOUSE:
Chest: There is a chest with a magic lock downstairs. These kind of chest usually require a key. If anyone knows how to open it please let us know.
7- BRIELBARA:
She is Coran's ex-lover who also got pregnant as a result of their "meetings". Unfortunately she is also a married woman and her husband Yago was really mad when he discovered that their daughter Namara was a half-elf. He cursed her and went away to live in the Low Lantern(see Southern part of BG for more details). Before he did so he told Brielbara that he has a book which allows him to reverse his curses but that she will never get it. Brielbara asks you to get it for her and to meet her at the Splurging Sturgeon at location (8). Note that if Coran is in your party you have to accept the quest, else he leaves.
8- SPLURGING STURGEON:
1st Floor:
Lantanara: A woman who had a dream about you in which you were an iron god
who crumbled on his knees. Tells you to be careful as the fate seems to be
against you.
Bartender:
Rooms: All 4 types of rooms are available.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
Brielbara: You get 1000 Exp. and +1 Reputation for bringing her Yago's book
of curses. If you ask for a payment you get 200 gp. Coran also turns down
her offer to live together and stays with you.
Lusselyn: A fighter who obviously got one too many. He is really drunk and
if you talk with him 3 times he bets you 100 gp. that you won't be able to
defeat the Mustard Jelly upstairs. When you return he gives you only 60 gp.
because he got a bit thirsty while waiting.
2nd Floor:
Mr. Shade: You can bluff your way through the whole conversation (it gets
really funny, to be honest) but it leads nowhere. He eventually leaves when
you admit that you have no idea what he was talking about. Apparently, if
you have the Golden Pantaloons with you (see Friendly Arm Inn for more
details) Mr. Shade gives you some useful tips about them.
Mustard Jelly: There is a Mustard Jelly in one of the rooms which you'll
have to kill in order to win your bet with Lusselyn downstairs. You get 2000
Exp. for doing so. Use blunt weapons and avoid magic and missile weapons.
Chest: One of the chests has a magic lock and can't be picklocked. If anyone
knows how to open it please let us know.
Drawer: The locked and trapped drawer near the stairs contains a Sling of Unerring Accuracy, some 55 gold, and a few Bullets. The guards will be summoned if you try to break in.
9- BARREL:
Just in front of the Splurging Sturgeon there is a barrel containing a Friends scroll.
