Background

You'll receive this quest from Walter Phebus, who you'll find standing outside the Ultra-Luxe Casino (or perhaps the monorail station) in the New Vegas Strip.


Walkthrough

Walter will tell you that a rancher named Heck Gunderson has been bullying and robbing landowners all across the wasteland, and he'll ask you to find out what the "slithering snake" is up to. Walter will offer you 200 caps for this work, but with Barter 80 you can increase this amount to 400 caps.

You'll find Heck in the Ultra-Luxe Casino, sitting at a bar near the entrance. When you talk to him there, you'll learn that he came to the Strip to work out a deal with the White Glove Society, but that during the negotiations his son Ted went missing, and so now everything is on hold. If you offer to search for Ted, then you'll trigger the quest Beyond the Beef.

After learning about Heck, when you return to Walter, he'll pay you what he owes, and you'll be given four ways to complete the quest:

• You can offer to kill Ted for 250 caps (or 500 caps with Barter 80). This option will earn you 100 xp. You'll find Ted in the Kitchen level of the Ultra-Luxe Casino, locked in a freezer. He'll be all alone at that point, making him easy to kill.
  
  
• You can offer to kill Heck for 500 caps (or 1000 caps with Barter 90). This option will earn you 100 xp. You'll find Heck where you left him, sitting at the Top Shelf bar in the Ultra-Luxe Casino. If you frame Heck for Ted's murder in the quest Beyond the Beef, then a securitron will kill Heck for you. Otherwise, your best bet is to sneak a weapon past the door guards (which requires Sneak 50) and then kill Heck with a sneak attack. If you just open fire, then you'll probably turn all of the White Gloves in the casino against you.
  
  
• You can offer to kill both Ted and Heck for an unspecified amount. You'll end up earning 500-1500 caps, plus 200 xp.
  
  
• You can also defuse the situation. If you talk to Walter's wife Ethel, then she'll tell you that she doesn't think much of "fighting evil with evil," and she'll ask you to talk some sense into her husband. If you then talk to Walter again and pass a Speech 75 check, you'll convince him to give up on his revenge plot, and you'll gain 375 XP.

Note: If you reunite Ted and Heck in the quest Beyond the Beef, then you'll earn 500 xp, 500 caps, and some fame on the Strip, but you'll automatically fail this quest. So you'll have to decide which reward you like better. This quest gives the best reward if you're most concerned about earning caps.
