Background
You'll receive this mission immediately after completing the mission on the
Collector Ship.
But Note: If you want to complete the final mission without taking any losses, then you should delay going on this mission until you've completed all of the available dossier and loyalty missions. After completing this mission, you might only be allowed to go on one more mission before the final mission becomes available, and you'll have to go on the final mission right away if you want everybody to survive.
Walkthrough
When you return to the Normandy after completing the mission on the
Collector Ship, you'll learn that you'll need an IFF (Identify Friend/Foe) system to make it through the Omega-4 Relay. As fate would have it, the Illusive Man will have just the place for you to get one -- a derelict Reaper ship located in the Thorne system of the Hawking Eta cluster.
Inside the derelict Reaper, you'll find the remains of a Cerberus reconnaissance team, plus find some terminals detailing their indoctrination by the Reaper. Then just past the Medical Alcove, something will jolt the Reaper, and you'll learn that it's put up a kinetic barrier, blocking you from returning to the Normandy. EDI will then inform you that to remove the barrier, you'll need to disable the ship's mass effect core, which will cause the ship to crash into the planet Mnemosyne. That means not only will you need to find the IFF, you'll also have to figure out a way to escape the ship.
As you explore the Reaper, you'll get attacked by lots of husks, plus a few abominations and scions. Incendiary Ammo, shotguns, Shockwave, and Incinerate -- not to mention the multitude of explosive crates you'll find scattered around -- are all good weapons to use against them. In a few places, you'll also be helped by a mysterious geth sniper, but you won't actually meet him until later.
Note: Husks will only spawn when you reach designated spawn points. At many of these points, if you immediately back up (so you're not on the spawn point anymore), the husks will stop spawning until you advance again, allowing you to control the pace of the fight, and making the fight much easier. So when you see husks, you should always back up.
Eventually, you'll find the Reaper IFF in the Control Room, and you'll find the Reaper Core right next to it in the Core Room. Nothing will happen when you pick up the Reaper IFF, but when you enter the Core Room, you'll witness the geth sniper being overwhelmed by husks, which will then turn on you. You'll then have to fend off waves of husks and abominations. Each time you finish off a wave, the Reaper Core will become exposed for a short amount of time, and you'll be able to attack it. So slowly but surely, you should be able to wear down the core.
Once the core has been destroyed, you'll automatically pick up the remains of the geth sniper, and you'll escape back to the
Normandy. However, when you get there, you'll have to decide what to do with the sniper. If you give him to Cerberus (+20 renegade points), then you'll gain 50,000 credits. If you keep him on board the
Normandy (+20 paragon points), then he'll be placed in the AI Core, and if you reactivate him there, then he'll introduce himself as Legion, and he'll become a crewmate.
