Location: Freeside

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Overview

Freeside is made up of two zones: the outer zone (where you'll enter from the wasteland) and the inner zone (where most of the interesting buildings are). The game will show two different maps for these zones. We've combined the maps on this page.

Sometimes in Freeside you'll get attacked by a thug or two. These battles should not cause you any problems.

If you gain some fame with Freeside, then a member of the Kings will sometimes give you a present, including random piece of food, a Stimpak, or a handful of caps.

1 - Small Ruined Building

Sitting by the entrance to the building, you'll meet a beggar named Rotface. He'll sell you tips for one cap each, and he's involved in the quests G.I. Blues and Kings' Gambit. Inside the building, you'll sometimes meet Max and Stacey (they sleep in the building at night and run around inside and outside Freeside during the day). Max will have Euclid's C-Finder on him, which you might need for the quest I Could Make You Care.

2 - Mick & Ralph's

Outside the shop you'll run into Dixon, a drug dealer who will sell you a variety of drugs, including Dixon's Jet and Dixon's Whiskey. Dixon is also involved in the quest High Times, which you can pick up inside the Old Mormon Fort (Exit B).

Inside the shop you'll meet Mick and Ralph. Mick will sell you weapons and repair your equipment (up to 85%). If you pass a Speech 30 check with Mick, then he'll show you all of his wares, including C-4 Plastic Explosives and the Grenade Machinegun. If you ask Mick how business is, then he'll mention that the Omertas have stopped buying weapons from him, and that he doesn't know why. This will lead to you receiving the "Omertas Stopped Buying from Mick" note. You'll discover the answer during the quest How Little We Know.

Ralph will sell you some general goods, including a Container of Chlorine, which you might need for the quest How Little We Know. If you pass a Speech 50 check, then Ralph will admit that he's a forger, and he'll offer to sell you a Counterfeit Passport for 500 caps (or only 375 caps if you pass a Barter 50 check, or for free if you select the passport as your reward from the quest G.I. Blues). Ralph is also involved in the quests King's Gambit and Wang Dang Atomic Tango.

Note: You can use the Counterfeit Passport to enter the New Vegas Strip. Since another way to enter the Strip is to pass a credit check, which only requires you to have 2000 caps, there isn't much reason to purchase the passport.

On the upper floor of the shop, you'll find 150 Rocket Souvenirs (in the vending machine), a copy of Tales of Chivalrie (on the kitchen table), a copy of Programmer's Digest (on the desk), and a copy of Today's Physician (on the bed).

3 - Large Ruined Building

You'll find four ammunition boxes and a 9mm Pistol on the upper level of the building.

4 - Genaro

Genaro will sell you some food items.

5 - Bodyguards

At this spot you'll find some bodyguards for hire, including one named Orris. Orris is involved in the quest G.I. Blues.

6 - Water Pump

You'll find a member of the Kings named Tapper next to the water pump. He'll allow you to drink from the pump for 10 caps, and he'll also sell you Purified Water. His dialogue won't change if you join the Kings.

7 - Ruined Store

You'll only be able to enter this store during the quest G.I. Blues.

8 - Cerulean Robotics

Inside this building you'll encounter several giant rats, but you'll find a Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Cap (on a table), a copy of Lying, Congressional Style (on the ground next to one of the desks), lots of Scrap Metal and Sensor Modules (all over), and a Cerulean Robotics Key (on the ground next to a couch). You can use the key to unlock an "average" tool cabinet, where you'll find a Terminal Access Card, which you can use to bypass the security of the "average" protectron processing interface in the back of the building. The protectron controlled by the interface is involved in the quest Wang Dang Atomic Tango.

Note: If you have the Wild Wasteland trait, then when you exit the building, you'll get ambushed by Malefic Maud, Irate Ida, and Rancorous Ruth. This is a reference to the Monty Python sketch Hell's Grannies.

9 - Atomic Wrangler

The Atomic Wrangler is one of only two places outside the New Vegas Strip where you can gamble (the other being the Vikki and Vance Casino in Primm). In order to gamble, you'll need to purchase Atomic Wrangler Chips from the cashier in the back room. If you win chips from the gambling games, then you'll also earn some other rewards, including booze, a Dapper Gambler Hat (after 2500 chips), and a Dapper Gambler Suit (after 3750 chips). If you win 5000 chips, then you'll get banned from gambling in the casino.

Note: Having a high Luck will make it easier for you to win at the casino games.

You'll meet four people of note inside the casino:
  • Caleb McCaffery (found somewhere on the main floor). He's involved in the quest Debt Collector.

  • Hadrian (found near the stage). He's involved in the quest Talent Pool.

  • Francine Garret (usually found behind the bar). She'll sell you drinks, and she'll give you the quest Debt Collector. Francine will also sell you a room (on the second floor) for 10 caps, but you'll get it for free if you complete her quest.

  • James Garret (usually found behind the bar). He'll sell you drinks, and he'll give you the quest Wang Dang Atomic Tango. James will also offer to improve your Freeside reputation if you pay him 250-1000 caps, but he'll only be able to do this once.
You can find some useful (but random) equipment in the casino, courtesy of two gun cabinets (one in the kitchen on the main floor, and one in the Garrets' suite of rooms on the third floor) and a first aid box (on the third floor). You can also find a bottle of Nuka-Cola Victory (in a shelf in the Garrets' bedroom on the third floor).

10 - Silver Rush

The Silver Rush used to be a casino, but now it's an energy weapons shop run by Gloria Van Graff and her brother Jean-Baptiste Cutting. Each time you enter the shop, you'll have to relinquish your weapons. This will happen until you've progressed far enough in the quest Birds of a Feather. There isn't any way to avoid getting frisked. If you kill the guard out front (even while hidden), then everybody inside the shop will turn hostile, and you'll no longer be able to use the shop.

Note: When you lose your weapons, you'll also lose all of the hotkeys associated with them. So be sure to re-assign your hotkeys when you get your weapons back.

Inside the shop, Gloria Van Graff will sell you a variety of energy weapons and supplies, including the Multiplas Rifle, the Recharger Rifle, and the Recharger Pistol. She'll also give you the quest Birds of a Feather. Jean-Baptiste won't have much to say to you at first, but eventually he'll talk to you during the quest Birds of a Feather. The Van Graffs are also involved in the quest Heartache by the Number.

In the back room of the shop, you'll find a "hard" safe on the floor next to a "hard" terminal. You'll also find a Laser Pistol (on a table). To open the safe, you'll need to pick its lock or hack the terminal. Inside the safe, you'll find a random collection of guns, ammunition, and mods. Upstairs, you'll discover two "hard" locked rooms. In one you'll find three grenade boxes, an ammunition box, and a gun case. In the other you'll find a Plasma Rifle plus some Energy Cells and Microfusion Cells. You'll also find a Plasma Pistol in one of the bedrooms.

11 - King's School of Impersonation

You won't find much in the way of loot in this building -- just a copy of Boxing Times in the King's room on the third floor -- but you will meet three people of interest:
  • Pacer (in the lobby). You'll have to pay him at least 50 caps or pass a Speech 60 check before he'll open the door to the stage and allow you to meet with the King. However, if you have to pay, then you'll be able to get your money back when you talk to the King. Pacer is involved in the quests G.I. Blues and Kings' Gambit.

  • The King (by the stage or in his room on the third floor). He's in charge of the Kings, and he'll give you the quests G.I. Blues and Nothin' but a Hound Dog. The King is also involved in the quest Kings' Gambit.

  • Sergio (in the dressing room near the stage). He'll be carrying Figaro and the Memphis Kid Outfit. If you join the Kings, then he'll style your hair.

12 - Squatter Camp

Near the campfires here you can meet Old Ben and Lady Jane. Old Ben is involved in the quest Wang Dang Atomic Tango, and Lady Jane is involved in the quest Debt Collector.

13 - Securitrons

You'll encounter five securitrons here guarding the gate to the New Vegas Strip (Exit C). They won't allow you to go through the gate unless you pass a credit check (which requires you to have 2000 caps in your possession), have a Counterfeit Passport (which you can purchase from Mick & Ralph's, #2), or pass a Science 80 check. You can also kill the securitrons for the Vegas Gate Key, which will unlock the gate.

Exits:
  1. Gate between the inner and outer zones of Freeside.
  2. Entrance to Old Mormon Fort.
  3. Gate to the New Vegas Strip.
  4. Wasteland exit.
